Super Brawl Rush is a beat'em up set in the scorched post-apocalyptic lands of the near future. Fight your way to the top between swarms of bloodthirsty thugs, mutants and cultists.
dBXY composed and produced the soundtrack and all sound effects for Super Brawl Rush. The music was an exciting opportunity to introduce some heavier influence, we felt a heavy metal soundtrack kept up the adrenaline and didn’t feel out of place against the chunky pixel-art aesthetic. The sound design presented a challenge in that the crashes and impacts needs to be weighty and forceful while still piercing through the heavy music mix. The end result was well received, and you can hear the final product of the soundtrack by clicking ‘listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here
The round blue Mellows return to tend to the Garden once more. Grow plants, bushes, trees, animals, water features and the great magical oak tree that has been rumored to have placed its seed there. Tend to the oak tree and grow it to the sky to harvest its Golden Acorns.
We channeled our inner Animal Crossing Villager on this project, a relaxing, lilting stroll through the garden accompanied by acoustic guitars, glockenspiels, and soft percussion. We wanted to introduce a player-influenced dynamic element to the music so we actually produced a 10 minute symphony, with 5 separate movements (with each movement adding extra instruments and new harmonic intrigue). The movements are introduced as the player levels up, meaning for the few minutes of the game the player will only hear movement A, and once they reach a certain point movement B will introduced to the loop, and so on, until all 5 movements are playing subsequently (The Full Garden Symphony). It’s a sort of extra bonus reward the player uncovers as they play.
TEN is a challenging platformer in which you face a relentless gauntlet of ten-second deathtrap rooms in a desperate struggle to escape your fate and uncover the truth!
This game has an interesting mechanic whereby danger presents itself to the player room-by-room, but only 10 seconds at a time. Obviously 10-second pieces of music would be jarring to listen to, so our decided approach was to create two variations for every piece of music in the game - a HEAVY version and a CALM version. these tracks sync up perfectly in game so that when the threats are present the HEAVY track can be heard, and once the 10 seconds is up it switches back to the CALM version (until the player enters the next room). This was a really fun challenge and it makes for a more appropriate, dynamic experience when playing.
dBXY are one of the leading audio teams in Children's entertainment on Netflix and YouTube, producing the music, sound design and voice-over for the 'Little Angel' brand, which has achieved a Diamond Play button with more than 10 million subscribers and 5 billion views channel-wide.
Little Angel recently achieved a spot in Netflix’s homepage Top 10 ‘Popular’ shows, in over 8 different countries (including the US, and the UK)
Cake Bash is a frantic party brawler where players control living baked-goods, fighting to be the tastiest of them all.
The game is developed by the super talented, British indie studio - High Tea Frog. It’s available now on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, Steam, and Stadia.
The game was an absolute treat to work on. The music called for something incredibly raw and live-sounding, something imperfect and improvisational in tone, almost like street music. We took a lot of inspiration from classic fast, quirky Nintendo tunes such as Kirby’s Gourmet Race and the Yoshi’s Island banjo theme from Super Smash Bros. Melee. Other heavy influences included Christophe Heral’s godly work on the newer Rayman titles, and the jazzy musings of Django Reinhardt.
Proudly presented by the lovely folks at 'Chipfreq', the makeshift musings of Cake Bash are now available on “Strawberry Frosting” pink-coloured vinyl! The pressing uses recycle vinyl which is less wasteful and more environmentally friendly.
This is a very small limited pressing so grab a copy here - www.vinylguru.co.uk/collections/chipfreq/products/ichz0001
Relax at the beach and find every type of shell
— Each shell is different, pick up and examine the ones that catch your eye.
— Rare shells need certain conditions to appear, can you solve the mystery?
— Try to collect the biggest and smallest of each species.
— Enjoy the calming music system and wave ambience.
Seashell was our most dynamic, ambitious project to date. The music is essentially proc-gen, some of it being randomised chords based on the scene, and other parts dependent on the player’s actions. The player essentially ‘writes’ the music. There isn’t any kind of ‘soundtrack’ available (due to the dynamic nature of the music and sounds), however you can hear a preview of the sounds on the game’s trailer here, and you can read a full write-up of my approach to this project here on AudioKinetic’s Wwise blog!
Fingun is a parody ‘lewd-em-up’ developed by PIXELTERIYAKI (Radio Squid, Super Weekend Mode).
This game was one of most out-there projects we’ve ever worked on. It was an illuminating experience writing for something so different. We pulled inspiration from unconventional places like J-Pop, Anime themes, and even music from power-metal bands like Dragonforce!
dBXY provided the Music and SFX for Fingun, now available on Nintendo Switch, and Steam
Gardener’s Path is a grid based puzzle game about defeating giant insects and protecting plants in underground gardens. We provided the SFX for this game developed by Brazilian developers Viridino Studios.
‘A young squid has been cursed! Now it’s up to you to lift the curse by reaching the depths of the sea with plenty of coins at the end! Explore deep sea floors while taking care of your enemies by utilizing the power of the siren song!’
Radio Squid was an interesting project to work on because the music directly influenced the gameplay. Bullets fire from the player (Squid) in time with the beat of the music, and bounce off the walls around you, so it quickly becomes a bullet hell game with rhythmic aspects. The music also evolves in fidelity as you progress through the game - the first track is very chiptune-esque and uses a limited voice count, and by the end the tracks are EDM-inspired with a much higher fidelity.
Get ready for more vibrant, colorful shooting fun in the anticipated sequel to Bouncy Bullets! Can you find the portal to exit each level?
Bouncy Bullets 2 is obviously similar in style to the first iteration, which we also provided music and SFX for. It has a lot of ‘trippy’ visuals and the audio needed to follow suit, so for the soundtrack we took inspiration from a lot of unusual places like fitness music, hip-hop, and dreamy ambient soundscapes. The sound design is just as absurd, using everyday objects like cash registers and telephone beeps to compliment mundane interactions or UI elements. The game’s soundtrack can be heard by clicking ‘Listen’ in the menu navigation above.
Birthday of Midnight has been developed by Petite Games and published by Ratalaika Games. It's a platform puzzle title with a golf style movement twist. You are asked to move “Midnight” from his start location to the beacon of light that is shining from the floor.
We composed and produced the soundtrack for Birthday of Midnight using just solo piano arrangements - no other instrumentation whatsoever. This was an interesting creative limitation to set ourselves as it meant our writing was exposed and couldn’t be hidden behind layers and layers of instruments or complex production techniques. The result is an ominous, beautiful and minimal soundtrack, fitting perfectly with the dark, shadowy world of the Midnight game series.
Concept Destruction is all about driving miniature cars made of cardboard, and crashing them into each other to earn points by destroying them!
dBXY worked on the game soundtrack and all sound effects. The music was an exciting opportunity to introduce some heavier influence, we felt a heavy metal soundtrack kept up the adrenaline while providing a slightly comical twist against the innocent, light visuals of miniature makeshift environments. The sound design presented a challenge in that the crashes and impacts needs to be weighty and forceful while still sounding true to the materials involved (paper and cardboard!) The end result was well received, and you can hear the final product of the soundtrack by clicking ‘listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here
Zero Zero Zero Zero is a hard-as-nails platformer in which you play as a courageous 1-bit cowboy. It’s available digitally on all current-gen consoles, including Nintendo Switch and PSVita. You can find out more and play a free demo of the game here
The game contains a lot of 'glitching' and restarting of levels, including a concept where every time you die, you start again on a brand new level. This required the tracks to be a little shorter than usual because of the fast-paced nature of how quickly players are completing/restarting new levels.
‘Pick your cube and blast your way to victory in RogueCube!’
RogueCube is an arcade top-down shooter with solo campaign, local multiplayer campaign or local multiplayer competitive modes. It takes inspiration from other similar titles in the genre such as Nuclear Throne and Enter The Gungeon.
There are a huge amount of weapons in the game and creating a distinctive, satisfying sound for each piece of equipment was a welcome challenge. The music in the game was designed to drive the player forwards with a sense of adrenaline, and keep them coming back with hooky melodies.
Players take the role of a theme park technician that needs to collect batteries to repair the haywire robots. With your handy Mekabolt, use the out of control robots to your advantage to overcome obstacles and obtain the batteries across 100 puzzle platforming challenges.
dBXY worked on the music and SFX for Mekabolt, drawing inspiration from bouncy electronic dance tracks and Theme Park music elements such as increasing instrumentation and track fullness as players progress deeper into each of the Park’s zones.
In a world where the sky is blue and water is pink, with icebergs replaced by floating ice-creams, Bouncy Bullets is a colourfully vibrant first-person shooter that will task players to traverse wonderful terrains, in a bid to reach the portal that awaits them at the end of every level!
Bouncy Bullets has a lot of ‘trippy’ visuals and the audio needed to follow suit, so for the soundtrack we took inspiration from a lot of unusual places like K-pop, hip-hop, and dreamy ambient soundscapes. The sound design is just as absurd, using everyday objects like cash registers and telephone beeps to compliment mundane interactions or UI elements. The game’s soundtrack can be heard by clicking ‘Listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here.
War is coming whether you’re ready for it or not soldier! In Attack of the Toy Tanks, across the game’s 60 levels in the main campaign, players must take control of the provided vehicle of war and battle it out across different arenas and be the last tank standing.
Attack of the Toy Tanks is a huge battle which takes place on a seemingly miniature scale, so for the music we went with a mixture of over-the-top epic brass and strings, juxtaposed with toy instruments like xylophones and kazoos. The SFX received the same treatment with a mixture of huge explosions and gunshots mixed with squeaky toys and other playful percussive sounds.
Neon Junctions is a First Person Puzzle-Platformer imbued with atmosphere of synthwave and 80s.
Neon Junctions obviously has a distinctive Vaporwave aesthetic, which required the music to be very complimentary, hopefully not to the point of being cliché. We kept it appropriately pastiche by leaning into the synthwave instruments while injecting our usual dbxy flavour in with memorable melodies and interesting harmonic content. The soundtrack can be heard by clicking ‘Listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here.
Peasant Knight is a puzzle-platformer. With a twist. You're relentlessly dashing into the face of danger, namely traps such as suddenly erupting flame pits. You can only go forward, or stop completely.
The game challenges your muscle memory and hand-eye coordination, but most of the thrill comes from solving levels - each level is like a complex machine of traps that you need to navigate through and solve.
Peasant Knight was a cute little project that stretched our Medieval music muscles. There were only 3 tracks commissioned for the game but they’re all packed with pace and hummable melodies. The tracks can be heard by clicking ‘Listen’ in the menu navigation above, or by clicking here.
Inspired by an arcade classic, Super Destronaut DX is a retro space shooter that pits you against an enemy more dreaded than a UFO - a scoreboard.
This is the third iteration in the ‘Super Destronaut’ series of games, and is considered the ultimate, collectors version. This optimum edition is the version dBXY was first brought on board for. We were asked to create a brand new soundtrack to compliment the overhauled graphics and brand new modes included in the game. We stayed true to the character of the previous soundtracks whilst adding our own flair and colour.
A physical edition of the game was made available through EastAsiaSoft, with a CD of the soundtrack included. Super Destronaut DX Intruders Edition is a development of Petite Games and Ratalaika Games. Published by Eastasiasoft Limited.
Chessaria: The Tactical Adventure is an award-winning strategy game which combines a rich story driven adventure with the tactical depth and breadth of Chess. The game was developed by the talented Paris-based studio - Pixel Wizards.
Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, we worked closely with the developers and backers to create a musical voice in keeping with the art style and RPG inspirations of the game. Drawing inspiration from fantasy adventure soundtracks such as Hearthstone, The Legend of Zelda and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Tetra’s Escape is a puzzle game inspired by the same blocks that originate from another classic… The goal is to save the Tetras, small creatures that can turn into different blocks, using their transformative abilities to reach an exit portal.
This game was developed by French studio ABX Games, and published by Ratalaika Games. The game released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam in 2018.
For the music we took inspiration from golden-era PlayStation 1 games such as Rayman and Croc. The game’s sound design is also the work of dBXY.
InkSplosion is a 2D twin-stick shooter full of vibrancy and colour, developed by Petite Games and published by Ratalaika Games
The game released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Steam in 2018. All audio aspects (music + SFX) were composed, produced, and implemented by dBXY.
Twin Robots is a 2.5D platformer where you can switch control between two little robots; They have been imprisoned and need to find the way out of each level. You can play alone, or with a friend in local co-op multiplayer.
This game achieved humble success on Wii U and Steam, so for the 'Ultimate Edition' release on Nintendo Switch the music was completely redone by the team at dBXY.
Think Peg Solitaire with cute creatures instead of pegs, and feature-filled terrains instead of a wooden board. Oddhop is a unique puzzle game, where each puzzle takes place on a hexagonal terrain populated by a group of creatures. The goal is to collect points by eliminating the creatures one by one until a single survivor remains. This elimination is carried out by making the creatures jump, or hop, over other adjacent creatures.
Created by Finnish developer, Mika Halttunen, Oddhop’s quirky and vibrant visuals called for an organic and playful soundtrack inspired by the likes of Rayman Origins and Peter McConnell’s Broken Age soundtrack.
In Plantera you build your own garden and watch it grow with new plants, bushes, trees, and animals. As you play and expand your garden you will attract Helpers; small, round, blue creatures that will assist you with your harvesting tasks.
Plantera was first released on Steam in January of 2016. Due to its popularity, it was ported to 3DS and Wii U by Ratalaika Games. Later, a deluxe edition of the game titled Plantera DX was ported to Nintendo Switch. We were brought on board for the additional music on this deluxe version of the game.
A fighting RPG with a gorgeous Japanese style! This game is developed by the unbelievably talented team behind the viral Ukiyo-e-Heroes art project.
Edo Superstar was crowdfunded via Kickstarter for $65,000, having built a fanbase from their previous Art project.
The visual style of the game is refreshingly unique and we decided to go for a cocktail of traditional Japanese scales and instruments, mixed with modern pop production and rhythm elements.
Phoenix Rising is a fan-made episodic adventure on Windows PC and possibly more platforms following (Episode One released in 2018). The game has been in development since about 2010 and has accumulated quite a large fanbase in that time. Visit the official Twitter page here. The game also has a thriving ‘Let’s Play’ community, and the Beta for Episode One receiving more than 200,000 downloads in the first 2 weeks of release.
Working on Phoenix Rising was a labour of love for us, and great fun. We wanted to inject our own flavour into the tracks, however we were obviously required to write in a similar style to the existing Pokémon games - this came naturally to us as we’re huge fans of main series Pokémon games, new and old!
